Looking back on 2025

2025 was a year full of ups and downs. Hard times for our region and city, as political tensions were high, and many crucial services stopped due to cuts in international aid. But mostly good times inside our school, where young musicians from both side of the divide connected, created, and invested in themselves and their future.

Our students travelled to Berlin and Skopje, together with Musicians Without Borders, Roma Rock School, Fontys Rockacademie, and Clash!. Our teachers and student-trainees received training and master classes at the Rockacademie in the Netherlands. And next year, we hope to attend Balkan Trafik! Festival in Brussels once more, to successfully end our Music Connects project, and start the next school year on a high note.

Here’s what our project Music Connects achieved in 2025:

141 young musicians (98 from North and South Mitrovica, 43 from Skopje) participated in 3,009 music lessons, mixed band rehearsals and workshops.
19 teachers and trainees from Mitrovica Rock School and Roma Rock School received teacher training from the Dutch Fontys Rockacademie.
12 ethnically mixed bands with 58 members rehearsed, recorded, and performed their original songs.
Two supergroups with 8 members from Mitrovica Rock School and Roma Rock School performed their original songs in Berlin.
We delivered two training weeks in Mitrovica, one training in Skopje, a summer school in Skopje, an exchange in Berlin, and teacher training in the Netherlands.
We organized 8 concerts, 40 training sessions, and spent 29 days in the studio.
We reached an audience of approximately 4.4m with 15 press reports in four languages.

Music as a Response to Division

A blog by Filip Milovanović, professional session musician and drum teacher at Mitrovica Rock School. This blog was written as a contribution to the project “Cultural Canvas of Northern Kosovo,” and originally posted on the website of NGO ACDC.

Back in 2008, I heard that the Mitrovica Rock School was opening. Older musician friends from the city invited me to attend drum classes, and that’s how my life journey truly began.

Now, 16 years later, I teach at that very same school and work what is possibly the best job in the world.

I’m somewhat glad that music and the rock school taught me that differences in faith, religion, or skin color don’t really matter—because at the end of the day, we’re all here for the same reason: to create music.

Music has this unique power to overcome barriers that politics and history often place, simply because, on stage, you see musicians—not Serbs, Bosniaks, Albanians, and so on.

I had the chance to play and work with people from many different cultures, and now I realize how important that is in shaping a musician/human being, especially someone born in a “strange” place like this, where unfortunately there’s still a lot of hatred and perspectives that perhaps shouldn’t exist.

That’s why I believe we have to find ways to make the world a better place. I believe music does that every day. But if we, as people, don’t want to make that change, then I believe we face a serious problem.

Culture and music need no translation. Emotion is understood without words. That’s exactly why I believe the diversity we have should be seen as our greatest wealth—because by combining all these differences and cultures, we can create something truly valuable.

At the end of the day, multiethnic cooperation is not just an artistic act—it’s a social stance that shows something different is possible and achievable, if you truly want it.

Music Connects: A different experience of normal

The following blog is taken from a speech given by Wendy Hassler-Forest, Music Connects Program Manager, presented to Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) of the European Commission.

What you see in this video might look like nothing out of the ordinary. Normal young people doing normal young people things.

But the young people in this video are not growing up in what people in countries like the Netherlands or the US would call ordinary. They are from Mitrovica, Europe’s most divided city, and they’re coming from both sides of the divide.

In Mitrovica, everything is dominated by ethnic division, ethnic identity, and the unresolved conflict that caused, and was deepened by, the Kosovo war in 1999.

The division between the Serb community in the North and the Albanian community in the South is almost complete. Different languages, different educational systems, different healthcare systems. To some extent, controversially, different governing bodies. And underlying it all, the history and trauma of a recent civil war.

But Mitrovica had another history: before the war, it had been a city where rock, pop and jazz bands had thrived. Where there were jam sessions and festivals. And where musicians from the two communities didn’t think twice about coming together to make music. This history, and the infrastructure that supported it, had been wiped out by the war. Mitrovica musicians asked for our help to rebuild it, and the idea for a rock school was born.

Since 2008, Mitrovica Rock School has been working to bring together the city’s young people, who have grown up without any contact whatsoever with the other community.

We took small, incremental steps. First bringing participants across the border to Skopje to form mixed bands there, as it simply wasn’t safe enough in Mitrovica. Later, when we had too many mixed bands to keep bringing everyone to Skopje, we made it possible for mixed bands to meet and rehearse in Mitrovica, albeit in secret.

Still later, we organized our first mixed concerts in Mitrovica, for a mixed audience. And every time we took another step and repeated it a couple of times, those rehearsals or those concerts started to feel normal. We were not pushing people out of their comfort zones, we were growing those comfort zones, and growing community support as we went.

During my time in former Yugoslavia, this word “normal” kept coming back. “We just want a place where we can be normal.” Or, in judgment: “That guy isn’t normal.” Normal doesn’t actually describe the prevailing situation, but rather some moral judgment on what it should be. And it occurred to me that, with every step we took to bring people together in Mitrovica, we were expanding the city’s definition of normal.

The past two years, since the start of our Creative Europe project, old divisions have flared up, raising concerns about a return to violence. And with every setback in the security situation, we have spoken about a new normal that’s emerging – this time not in a positive sense.

But inside the school, surprisingly little has changed. Despite the rhetoric, the riot police and the protests outside, ethnically mixed bands have continued to come together. Students and teachers have continued to cross the other side to see each other. Why? When every other interethnic project in Mitrovica had to stop, or was unable to find participants, why could we continue?

A big part of the reason is our Creative Europe project, Music Connects. Music Connects doesn’t only connect youth from North and South Mitrovica. It connects them with students from Roma Rock School in North Macedonia, where Roma and Macedonian youth play together in bands. It connects them to artists and cultural organizers in Berlin, and here in Brussels, through residencies at Balkan Trafik festival. And it connects them to students of the Dutch Rockacademie: young people who, like them, dream of a career in music.

These connections shift something. They bring the Mitrovica youth closer together, as they share these new experiences, and meet these new people. It gives them something to continually look forward to: positive, exciting experiences where the focus is not on ethnic identity or political affiliation, but on talent and potential. And they create networks of young artists who are, despite their geographical distance, similar in their aspirations.

This project is just a little David against the Goliath of the frozen conflict over Northern Kosovo. But it’s an incubator: a place where a generation can grow up with a different experience of normal. An experience which in many cases informs who they become and how they look at the world as adults. And one that they can project outwards as they grow into the leaders of tomorrow.

Music Connects Training Week 2024: My week with Mitrovica Rock School

This month I joined the Music Connects team in Mitrovica, a small city in Northern Kosovo. Each year, four of the Music Connects partners–Mitrovica Rock School, Fontys Rockacademie from the Netherlands, Roma Rock School in North Macedonia, and Musicians Without Borders–organize two of these training weeks. They are designed to give the young music students opportunities to learn new skills, to have intensive instrument and workshop sessions, and to welcome new students into the music school.

Rehearsals lasted late into the evening, as new material was written throughout the week.

Often referred to as one of Europe’s “most divided cities”, Mitrovica represents a fault line in the tension between the ethnically Serb and Albanian communities. The city curls around the Ibar, a shallow clear river that winds its way through the countryside. The river separates the majority Serb North and the majority Albanian South. Whilst not blatant to outsiders eyes, the division in Mitrovica reveals itself subtly in every facet of the city. Statues dedicated to both Serb and Albanian national heroes occupy the centers of each side of the city. Many residents of Kosovo simply do not cross the river, preferring the safety of their own community. On my first full day in the city, I decide to walk the journey from one branch of the school to the other; one of my new friends decides to walk with me. A chance for me to get the lay of the land and see some more of Mitrovica. As we walk across the East bridge – the bridge that cars can pass over – I’m enjoying seeing more of the town, taking in the scenery of the dramatic hills, the curve of the river, and the bustle of activity around me. Unbeknownst to me, my new friend has been quiet for the whole walk. As we pass into the other side of the city he tells me “this is the first time I have walked from one side of the city to the other.” He has lived in Mitrovica his whole life.

When I asked the school directors how the week has gone so far, they are relieved to say that it’s going well, all the bands are working well together, the atmosphere is positive, and the creativity is starting to flow. Over coffee I overhear one of the new bands taking a break from their second ever rehearsal together. They are trading favorite artists and coming up with band names together. If I hadn’t known otherwise, there is nothing to say that these students have not been long time school friends. Through the doors of Mitrovica Rock School, politics is left at the door, and young musicians have the space and freedom to be just that: musicians. For the students of Mitrovica Rock School, whilst the school buildings themselves represent a space of absolute safety – an oasis of calm – there are still daily obstacles. To ensure the safety and comfort of each student, MRS staff will drive individual students across the river, an option that’s preferred by most over taking the five-minute walk across the central footbridge that connects the two town centers.

For the Rockacademie students, these training weeks are a chance to build upon their skills from their music degree in the form of workshops, masterclasses, and working with the students on a one-on-one basis. For the Rock School students, the week is a chance to gather new skills, and focus their attention on putting together new material, honing their set, ready for the final performance at the weekend. During this training week, Mitrovica Rock School welcomed a new cohort of students, some of whom are very new to playing music, and almost all of whom have not worked in a band environment before. This is where Mitrovica Rock School comes into its own. The mixed band program puts students into bands made up of musicians from both sides of the city, based on nothing but their previous experience with music. For these musicians, this will be the first time they have ever worked with people from the other side of the river.

Saturday morning, performance day. The sun is beating down on Mitrovica, and I’m relieved to learn that it’s not just me that’s feeling the heat, the students are rushing into shade, clutching ice water. We’re in the North branch, where due to high demand, one-on-one vocal lessons are being improvised with the Rockacademie trainers. Gear for the night’s concert is being loaded in. Despite the heat, energy is up, the musicians are in their element.

Saturday evening, everything comes together onstage.

By the end of the night, all the bands have performed brand new songs, some of which were written less than 24 hours beforehand. For many of the new students, this is the first time performing in a band in front of an audience, and though the nerves are palpable, every single band is given a huge round of applause by the crowd. At Mitrovica Rock School, everyone supports each other, cheering each other on, sharing tips and tricks.

It was an amazing trip, and an eye-opening experience for me. What struck me most is the strength of the community that has formed around Mitrovica Rock School. Despite being based in one of the most divided cities in Europe, the bond that the school provides runs deep. Teachers that were there at the school’s start in 2008 are still teaching and turning up at concerts. Students that learned to play 15+ years ago at the school are now band coaches, tutors, or directors. The school itself is a vital cultural hub in the city for the local music scene, with many bands from both sides of the river relying on its facilities, equipment, and open welcoming atmosphere. I ask one person how they think Mitrovica would be changed if the school weren’t there. “Impossible” they respond, “This school and Mitrovica are the same thing now. There will always be some version of Mitrovica Rock School, because it has made such a difference to this city.”

Music Connects at Balkan Trafik Festival 2024

The last weekend of April I traveled to Brussels to visit the Balkan Trafik Festival. Every year, one of the main squares in the heart of Brussels city is transformed into a celebration of all things Balkan music and Balkan musicians.

As a project operating in the Balkans, working with young musicians in Kosovo and North Macedonia, our Music Connects program has a long-term partnership with the festival. Since 2023, we have been lucky enough to perform with our multi-ethnic youth bands on the Balkan Trafik stage with some incredible young performers. This year we were represented by three bands from the Music Connects partners: Moon Jacky Jane from Fontys Rockacademie in Tilburg (NL), Affinity from Mitrovica Rock School (Kosovo), and Right Turn from Roma Rock School from Skopje (North Macedonia).

The music students arrived in Brussels on Wednesday and had their rehearsals on Thursday and Friday. Mentored by coaches from the three rock schools, the group learned all about being on tour at a festival venue. They even had a cameraman to record their experiences and performances. In total they arrived in Brussels with eleven music students across the three bands. What an adventure!

When I met the young musicians on Friday night at the festival square, they were very excited and having a good time. One of the students said: ‘This is just awesome that we get the chance to be here at this festival, to travel with our band, and to meet other people. For some of us it’s our first travel experience abroad.’ They were also a little bit nervous for their performance the next day, as the level of performance on stage that night was high!

On Saturday we had a networking event with all the accompanying staff members and the performing artists. With Belgian beer of course! There was a warm welcome to the festival and all its participants from a representative of the Brussels-Capital Region who emphasized the importance of a diverse cultural sector in Brussels. Together with colleague Wendy, program manager for Western Balkans and Music Connects, we also met up with journalists and other people in the network of the festival.

And then, it was Show Time! Time for the last sound checks at 5.15 pm on Saturday. We joined in on the festival square and saw the young musicians were dealing professionally with their nerves and doing all the last sound checks. And then at 6.00 pm sharp their concert took off. Around the stage a curious festival audience gathered. The speaker of the festival introduced the three bands of Music Connects with: ‘These performers are playing in multi-ethnic bands, using their music to express themselves, to connect together and for change in their societies.’

They all played so well on stage! Each band brought their own personal style and sound. The set started with an energizing build up from acoustic trio Moon Jacky Jane from Tilburg, via the four-piece Affinity from Mitrovica to the power blast from Skopje’s Right Turn. All performing their own songs, giving their best performances and with amazing guitar solos! I really enjoyed seeing them and saw the relief in their eyes when all the performances were done. Big applause from the crowd!

That Saturday night the last festival performance was starring the Ukraine Eurovision winner Kalush Orchestra. Festival director Nicolas Wieërs and his team should be very proud of what they achieved. My colleague Wendy said: ‘I’m so proud of all the musicians in the bands, they played so well. All their preparation really paid off!’

And that’s a wrap! On Sunday after breakfast, we all went on our way back to our home bases: to Mitrovica, Skopje, and our various home towns in the Netherlands. We had an amazing experience together that I will bring back home with me. It was a pleasure that I could join them and experience the connecting power of music.

SKOPJE SUMMER SCHOOL 2023

On August 20, 41 young musicians from Mitrovica Rock School and Roma Rock School have participated on the Skopje Summer School which includes a week of rehearsals, a productive week for the ten bands who made new music and recorded one of them on the studio which they got to perform on their concert by the end of the week.

The bands were supported by band coaches from the two Rock Schools and also from the Fontys Rockacademie in the Netherlands.

For some students this was a first time experience so I decided to interview them and check with them how the Summer School was as a first experience for them.

For Era who has joined Mitrovica Rock School two years ago this was a first time experience about so many things for her! As a guitar player she says that it was one of the best experiences she’s had so far! “It was so fun to be able to connect with everyone to make music and learn all that the coaches had to offer”.

They all stated that the favorite part of the day was going to the rehearsals. “I was always excited to go and work on the songs we were making, and to learn new things from the coaches”.

“Yes I can say that my guitar playing skills have evolved because the coaches taught me different playing methods depending on the song” Era adds.

“I liked that everyone supported each other and the atmosphere was relaxed even though everyone was nervous, at least a little”. Iva who’s a vocalist and a guitar player explains her experience in general.

Elmir the bass player mentioned the concert night immediately which according to him was an unforgettable experience. “My favourite day also has to be the concert night. It was thrilling to perform for the first time in front of so many people. It was something that made me overcome my fear of performing in front of people”

“I think I have evolved my sense of understanding on how I should sound” Elmir adds.

“I have a better understanding rhythm in drums” Murat explains.

And as for the studio recording they were all unfamiliar with it because it was the first time that they were recording, they all explain how nervous they were and how many times they had to repeat and how many questions they had to ask to get it right but still they didn’t feel like giving up and they loved how their music turned out when they heard the studio version. Safe to say that they were satisfied with the final product!

When asked what’s something they have learned that they will never forget, the students shared with us such meaningful answers.

“I have learned that with the right people on your team you can achieve a lot in a short span of time” Elmir the bass player claims.

“I have learned that agreements in a conversation are the most important and that everyone has the right and freedom to say what they think and feel and when something doesn’t look or sound good at first, it can end up being better than you ever imagined” Iva adds.

“Something I have learned that I will never forget is that everything is better when you work together. When it comes to music when two or more minds combine you can make great things” Era states.

“I learned that music does connect people no matter the nationalities” Murat explains how he actually understood what the ‘Music Connects’ stands by on this Summer School.

Music Connects exchange in Berlin

On July 4, nine young musicians from Mitrovica Rock School and Roma Rock School traveled to Berlin to form two super groups, work on original songs, and perform for a live audience. The bands were supported by teachers from the two Rock Schools, as well as by two students and a teacher from Fontys Rockacademie in the Netherlands.

The exchange was hosted by Clash! Exchange and Learning. Clash! is a German-Dutch organisation specialized in intercultural, international and educational exchanges. Clash’s! projects aim to broaden the horizons of participants and help develop a greater consciousness for diversity, inclusivity and political citizenship.

Besides the musical activities, the week included several tours of Berlin, focusing on the city’s groundbreaking role in European music and film culture, its history of war and division, and its efforts to reconcile with the past.

After our return to Mitrovica, I spoke with fellow Mitrovica Rock School students Marko (center left in photo above) and Gegë (third from left in photo above).

“I enjoyed every second of it. I liked the rehearsals and all the people who were involved were awesome,” said Marko, who plays guitar.

Gegë, who plays keys, added: “The people there were different from the people I was used to everyday. I had the chance to meet very nice people”.

Marko and Gegë agreed it was an unforgettable experience. They were impressed by Clash’s historical tours and the places they visited in Berlin. The rehearsals were fun, especially because of the click with their band members and with the Rockacademie students.

As for me, my time in Berlin was an experience I will never forget. The Fontys Rockacademie team reflected such positive energy and really helped make the rehearsals amazing. I got to share the things I had worked on before and learn new things from others. I felt free to express my thoughts. I sang whenever I wanted to and everyone was okay with it. In fact, we had an acoustic jam where everyone just joined in. It was peaceful and beautiful.

To learn about each other’s cultures, Clash! facilitated a fun activity where we said our name and mimed our hobbies, and others had to copy what you just did and repeat your name. We also introduced ourselves in our own languages and had everyone repeat it, which for me was a very warm feeling to see everyone so interested in getting to know me and my point of view on everything.

One of the best parts of the week was an assignment where we split up into groups and went to explore a neighborhood in Berlin. We had to ask people about music, visit a record store, try a new food, and record city sounds. It was a great way to meet new people and get a feeling for Berlin beyond the touristic attractions.

The place where we had the performance was a warm, welcoming place. I felt very relaxed and confident performing on stage because everyone was so supportive. The atmosphere was so good that, even after we were done with the performance, our group and the group hosting us jammed together.

“Something I have learned is definitely a couple of words of Deutsch,” said Gegë.

And I have learned that people don’t always need a solution – sometimes they just need comfort.

Music Connects performs in Brussels at Balkan Trafik 2023

This year, students from Mitrovica Rock School, Roma Rock School and Fontys Rockacademie have formed three-school supergroups to perform at the Balkan Trafik Festival in Brussels, playing a mix of original material and new versions of Rock School classic. The 13 young musicians traveled to Belgium for a week of rehearsals, exploring the city, and of course their concert at the festival.

We talked with Mitrovica Rock School students Emin, Mihajlo, Emir, Rita and Dusan, who performed at the festival, and asked them what the week was like.

“It was my first time in Brussels. It was amazing, I got to see a different style of living and meet new people and musicians” says Emin, who plays guitar.

Mihajlo adds to this, explaining that it was his first time leaving the Balkans. “Everything about it was new for me, the flight, the atmosphere of a foreign place, and all the different people there. It was a really interesting and fun experience”

For most of the students it was the first time in Brussels. They describe how they loved the different style of living. It was a beautiful experience to mix the cultures together without judgement. Hearing about one another’s cultures and totally vibing with it and mostly how easily they adapted to Brussels. The group felt comfortable expressing their music taste: some students have gotten negative reactions to them liking metal and rock music before, but this was definitely not the case in Brussels. Finding other people that love it too made them very happy.

“I really enjoyed the rehearsal space. It was a small music club where jazz bands play, and they host a lot of dance classes too” says Rita.

During the week, the students befriended their fellow musicians from Skopje and Netherlands. They felt understood, and had lots of fun – especially during the rehearsals and on stage. They all felt relaxed and confident on stage, free to show what they had worked on during the rehearsals in the days leading up to the concert.

“It was amazing to see these great musicians being so relaxed, friendly and cheerful” says Dusan.

“It was a pleasure to have all these different cultures in one band,” Rita says, referring to the supergroups having Albanian, Serb, Roma and Dutch band members.

The students participated in a masterclass with ROJAZE, another Creative Europe project connecting musicians across Europe. Because ROJAZE works with jazz musicians, and Music Connects with rock music, it was very interesting to play a completely different style of music.
“It helped us reflect on where we are in terms of skills – if we were capable of picking up this music during the masterclass!”

We asked the students: ‘What’s something you’ve learned that you’ll never forget?’

Emir has a straight-forward answer for us: “When on stage, always have fun”
Rita chimes in with a similar sentiment: “Just enjoy the moment!”
Mihajlo learned that when playing in a bigger band, less is more “If you’re playing with a lot of different instruments, simplicity is the key, giving room for everyone to show what they can do.”

“I learned how to be more relaxed during concerts! It helped me a lot to play in this band, and will make a big difference for me in the future,” says Dusan.

What we achieved in 2022

As we approach the end of 2022, we’re taking a moment to look back and reflect on our work and impact during the year. Despite the situation in which our city finds itself now, 2022 started with a promise of opening borders and expanding horizons.

We launched the next phase of Music Connects – a four-year Creative Europe project with Musicians Without Borders, Roma Rock School, and Fontys Rockacademie, and new partners Clash! Exchange and Learning and the Balkan Trafik! Festival – a project which promotes inter-ethnic cooperation through state-of-the-art rock music education and connects young musicians and cultural organizers throughout Europe.

Also for the first time in three years, we were able to organize our traditional Skopje Summer School! 10 mixed bands wrote, rehearsed, recorded, and performed their songs in an exciting band camp in Skopje.

We spent the second half of the year preparing for exchanges in the Netherlands, Brussels and Berlin that are planned for 2023. Meanwhile, the school’s daily activities continued: we organized music lessons, band rehearsals, workshops, and concerts.

We end the year concerned for our city, but brightened by the talent and promise of our young musicians, and committed to continuing to make Mitrovica a better, more livable place for all.

Here’s what we achieved in 2022:

67 young musicians from North and South Mitrovica participated in 1,552 music lessons, mixed band rehearsals and workshops, led by 17 staff – 8 of whom are (former) students.
6 ethnically mixed bands with 26 members rehearsed, recorded, and performed their original songs, and released a music video.
We created two supergroups with 13 students from Mitrovica Rock School, Roma Rock School, and Fontys Rockacademie.
We organized 64 workshops, 9 concerts, and spent 12 days in the studio.

Our year in 2021

As the end of the year approaches, we like to look back and reflect on our impact during the year. And, despite the challenges that the pandemic poses for the entire cultural scene, 2021 was a highly active year for our school.

Mitrovica Rock School returned fully to in-person classes, with safety measures in place. Our mixed bands rehearsed, recorded original songs, and performed at several online concerts. And we welcomed a whole new generation of students for regular music lessons.

Our results in 2021:

79 young musicians from North and South Mitrovica participated in 1,445 music lessons, mixed band rehearsals and mixed workshops,
5 ethnically mixed bands with 22 members rehearsed, recorded and performed their own songs, and released a music video,
17 Mitrovica staff, 10 of whom are (former) students, participated in and led online training,

4 student-trainees participated in 21 days of sound engineering training at the Mitrovica Rock School’s recording studio.

Our plans for next year
In 2022, we hope to bring back our annual summer school and our international training weeks. To support this goal, our partner organization Musicians Without Borders has a launched a fundraising campaign to #BringBackMusic.

Any donation, big or small, will help us bring together young musicians of different backgrounds in Mitrovica. Next year, we’ll continue to bridge divides with the power of music, as we’ve done for over 13 years.
