Flashback Friday: Skopje Summer School 2019

April 10, 2020/by Wendy Hassler-Forest

Since it’s a bit quieter now, here’s a throwback to that time we went to Skopje! Remember that? If your answer to that question is no, you should keep reading and see what stories Jana has about her time at the Summer School.

On the 24th of August, all of us from Mitrovica Rock School piled into the bus to drive to Skopje. It was a lot of fun – we hadn’t seen each other for two months, because everyone had been gone for summer, so we needed to catch up.

After arriving, we did the maybe the hardest thing we had to do all week… Unload our gear at the school. But soon after, we could go right back to catching up, and in the evening, we went out to explore as we were newcomers at Skopje Summer School.

The next five days were filled with rehearsal after rehearsal: brainstorming and songwriting all day long, so we could play as many songs as possible at the final concert. If we got to take a break, we loved hanging out with the other musicians and listening in on other rehearsals – amazed at everyone’s talent and skills.

The highlight of the week for me, besides the concert, was when we went into the studio. It was our first time in a studio, so it was a bit confusing at first, but very interesting. We recorded our song ‘Eclipse’, just the band at first, and then we got to listen to our talented singer Rita lay down the vocal parts.

The rest of the week was smooth sailing. Almost like a calm before the storm – because then Friday came.

We woke up excited, pumped about the concert. We didn’t rehearse that day, so we had time to take pictures and selfies, and hang out with everyone. Just after 7, we left the hotel, ready for the concert and confident like never before. When our friends and family arrived from Mitrovica, things really became real. It seemed like it only took seconds before we were called to the stage to blow everyone’s socks off. And so we did.

All the bands at the concert were fantastic and were greeted with thunderous applause. And the party didn’t stop there: everyone was hanging out until the early hours, sad that we would have to leave the next day. But unfortunately, our Summer School for 2019 had to come to an end eventually.

All in all, we had the time of our lives, and shared some of the best moments of our lives. We can’t wait to see what 2020 will bring. Until then, you can listen to the music made by the Mitrovica Rock School, Roma Rock School and Music School Enterprise bands.
